Rep. Vargas Reaction to State of the Union
Washington, D.C. (February 6, 2019) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement today regarding President Trump’s State of the Union address.
“Once again, President Trump exploited another prime-time television spot to promote fearmongering and falsehoods. As California’s border representative, I had hoped he would have used this opportunity to highlight constructive ways to strengthen our nation. Unfortunately, he used flagrant examples to unfairly demonize immigrants and push for his wasteful wall.
“Though his speech called for bipartisanship and building bridges, I cannot take his words seriously. The policies implemented under his presidency have only created more division. I remain committed to protecting all people and advancing legislation to making our nation safer and more inclusive.”
Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
